Interview with Zedd
TEXT BY CASSIA CARTER
When one hears of Zedd’s accomplishments, it is hard not to compare them to those of Greek mythology’s king Midas. After all, the multi-platinum, GRAMMY award-winning DJ and producer does turn everything he touches into gold. Not hard, palpable gold, but a currency more precious even than that: music.
The German-Russian son of two musicians (his father is a guitarist and his mother, a piano teacher), Zedd – whose real name is Anton, has had harmony stream through his blood since birth. And it is in Germany, where he was brought up, that the promising young artist learned to truly master his art, especially within the realm of dance and electronic music.
After signing with Interscope Records in 2012, Zedd’s path evolved into one of prominent success, marked only with the traces of his undeniable talent. His hit song «Clarity», featuring British singer Foxes as the main vocalist, was released that same year, and later on, won a Grammy for «Best Dance Recording». From then on, Zedd’s magic touch was officially immortalized, and his ascent to the pantheon of music icons had begun.
As of recent years, Zedd has collaborated with some of the biggest names of today’s industry: Ariana Grande, Alessia Cara and Selena Gomez are but a few with whom he has teamed up throughout the years. With reason, for most of these tandems, such as « Hit The Night » (featuring Hayley Williams) have earned their stripes as platinum tracks, or kept the seat warm for several weeks as No. 1 on the Billboard’s Hot Dance / Electronic Songs chart (as with Zedd’s «I Want You To Know», featuring Selena Gomez). His most recent recordings, «Happy Now» (featuring Elley Duché) and «Lost in Japan» (released by Shawn Mendes), also boast Zedd’s golden - or rather, platinum - stamp of success.
Yet for a king atop an international music empire, Zedd remains humble and laid-back. His hobbies are those of any 29-year old, such as collecting shoes (his extensive collection has its own walk-in closet in his Hollywood Hills house) and playing video games. And it is precisely because of this candid youthfulness that this self-made virtuoso never ceases to amaze his kingdom. Because his songs encapture the voice of a whole generation: his own.
